Southfield Technology College has had a great history.

September 1984
Schools in West Cumbria were reorganised. Southfield school was opened to serve the communities on the south side of Workington together
with the communities of Distington, High Harrington and Pica.
The school was created on the former sites of Moorclose and Salterbeck schools.
Southfield’s Sixth Form was joined with Stainburn’s Sixth Form to create the Workington Joint Sixth Form. |
January 1989
In the early hours of Saturday 28th January a suspected electrical fault caused a fire which, fanned by a south-westerly wind, quickly spread through the school destroying a large part of the original building together with new classrooms which were in the process of being built to extend the size of the school.
Within days the playing field was turned into a school of temporary classrooms and the building programme restarted.

August 1990
Tom McLuckie, the first head teacher of Southfield retired and was replaced by David Humphries.

27th September 1994
The official opening of the new Southfield School by His Royal Highness, Duke of Kent KG.
Years 7 to 11 were now on one site and the Workington Sixth Form Centre moved to the former Moorclose site.

September 1996
The School was one of the first schools in the country to start GNVQ Part 1 qualifications as part of a UK pilot scheme to introduce more vocational qualifications into schools.

December 1996
David Humphries left to take up a headship in Devon. In April 1997 Stewart Gimber took over as head teacher.

July 1997
McDonalds help school to improve attendance by funding prizes for pupils with top attendance records

September 1998
Southfield School was awarded specialist technology status thanks to the financial support of local and national businesses.
The school was renamed Southfield Technology College.
New uniform introduced.

Southfield Technology College praised by OfSTED

May 1999
Southfield win choral speaking trophy and under-14 soccer team win Braithwaite Coaches Trophy

July 1999
Year seven win Allerdale schools football league
|
August 2000
College achieves its best ever exam results with 32% achieving %+ A* - C grades.
This 12% improvement earned the college a DfEE School Achievement Award.

April 2001
Second phase award of technology college status to Southfield.

Antony Worrall Thompson opens new food court

August 2002
Another outstanding set of KS4 results with Southfield raising its 5+ A* - C grades to 50%

August 2003
Southfield’s results just keep on improving!
59% of students achieve 5+ A* - C grades.
College ranked in the top ten of most improved specialist colleges in England.

Stewart Gimber left to become head of Ullswater College in Penrith and Lynda Dalkin took up the post as new head teacher.
